If you’re planning to purchase a new or new-to-you RV, you may want to consider how your RV selection could impact your healthy lifestyle. More interior space may better support exercising in an RV and make your fitness on the go easier to maintain. Kitchen amenities and fridge size may affect your healthy RV cooking options.
Differences in RV Classes
To help you with choosing the right RV, let’s walk through the different classes of RVs available. We will discuss considerations for how they might support your healthy lifestyle.
Motorhomes
- Class A motorhomes are the largest and heaviest class of RVs. They are characterized by their bus shape, built on a heavy-duty chassis, and self-powered by their own engine. This class of motorhome offers some of the most space and luxury possible in an RV.
- Class B camper vans are small class RVs with limited interior space. However, they offer maximum versatility for driving on most types of road conditions. These nimble vans offer the best capacity for venturing further from the beaten path. They are also self-powered with their own engine.
- Class B+ RVs are a hybrid between Class B and Class C. They are a larger version of a camper van, sometimes with a wider body (similar to Class Cs) but without the over-cab sleeping area of the Class C. These RVs are also self-powered with their own engine.
- Class C campers are classified by their build on a regular truck chassis. They are also self-powered with their own engine and traditionally have the over-cab RV shape. Class C RVs offer more amenities than Class B but are smaller and easier to drive than their larger Class A cousins.
Towables
- Travel Trailer RVs come in many sizes from 12 to 40 feet long. They are towed on a typical ball and hitch behind a regular vehicle. This class of RV is not self-powered and requires a separate vehicle to be moved.
- 5th Wheel RVs are a second towable RV option, generally between 25 to 45 feet long. These RVs are classified by the way the 5th wheel is towed in the bed of a truck. This towing style allows for the design of the trailer to have extra interior living space. This class of RV is not self-powered and requires a separate vehicle to be moved.
So when it comes to your RV shopping checklist, the different classes of RVs might be a big consideration in choosing the right RV for you. Let’s explore some more specifics on how to pick the right camper for your healthy RV lifestyle.
Fitness on the Road for your Healthy Lifestyle
Generally, the more interior space the better, because you may be able to keep up with your travel workouts without having to overcome outside conditions (weather, bugs, dust, etc). Thus, a Class A Motorhome or a 5th Wheel (especially a toy hauler) may be the better choice. Working out inside of your RV is ideal for those who are intimidated about working out outside. Some fitness-minded RVers even convert their toy hauler toy box into an at-home gym with all their RV workout equipment. When you’re RV shopping, consider if there’s space for your RV travel workouts. If you’ll be staying in RV parks primarily, many do have fitness centers and perhaps the interior space consideration will matter less to you.
Healthy RV Meals for your Healthy Lifestyle
Again, with more space it will be easier to support your healthy eating and cooking goals:
- storage space to have your preferred ingredients on-hand
- counter space to prepare foods
- fridge space to preserve fresh food
And of course, the more space for RV cooking accessories and appliances the better. If you have the ability to easily prepare healthy foods, you’re more likely to stick to your healthy RV meals and recipes. Air fryers, smokers, grills, and Blackstones are among the most popular RV kitchen gadgets. Many RVers love to have an outdoor kitchen setup, and all of these appliances can be used outdoors. If you know you love cooking outside, the inside kitchen space may not be of concern to you on your RV shopping list.
With proper motivation and determination, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle in any RV. If you can’t prioritize an inside workout area AND an ample kitchen with the sizes and classes of RVs you’re shopping for, perhaps just prioritize one of the two. RV life is all about trade-offs and ingenuity, but you may be more successful if you have only one hurdle to overcome, rather than two.
